Real Estate & Construction Webinar Series: common industry issues and trends

State of play: navigating Foreign Investor Surcharges
Webinar | Wednesday 16 October | 12:00pm - 1:00pm AEST | 1 CPD Point

We're delighted to launch our upcoming industry focused webinar series where we will discuss the trends and issues for those operating in the real estate & construction industry.

Our first interactive webinar will be an overview and comparative highlights of recent changes and the current state of play for foreign surcharges around the nation, along with tips for identifying and understanding the impact of these.

Victoria was the first state to introduce foreign surcharges on Australian property acquisitions in 2015. In less than five years, a version of foreign surcharges has spread to every Australian state and territory (except NT), with the rates more than doubling since their introduction. Unfortunately, as is typical of State Taxes, the scope and application of the surcharges are different between the jurisdictions. We are also seeing regular changes to the reach and impact of the surcharges, particularly to real estate transactions and investments.

Steven Paterson, Partner and Head of Grant Thornton's State Taxes team will examine the current status of the surcharges, drawing out some of the more unique aspects of each jurisdiction and their practical impact on commercial real estate transactions and investments.

As an interactive webinar, you will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session, and the webinar will be recorded and shared on our website for your CPD records.

Upcoming topics in our series will include:
  • Navigating the new QBCC reporting requirements including Minimum Financial Requirements
  • GST & property – general update
  • Tax issues for non-resident property owners
  • Building & Construction  recognition of income
  • GST & Property – deep dive into issues around the Margin Scheme
Please indicate your interest in receiving invitations to our future webinars via the registration form.
